An absolute monster

While we’re sure to see home monster homers tonight in the Home Run Derby, there was only one monster in the ring for UFC 100’s main event. That monster was Brock Lesnar and to say that he dominated Frank Mir from the beginning of the match until Lesnar was pulled off a defenseless opponent might be an understatement.

The end of the fight is where the real controversy starts though. Being booed by the Las Vegas fans, Lesnar not only decided to flip them off, but he would also start screaming and then, once Mir got to his feet in a punch-drunk state, Brock went over to go and berate his defeated rival.

You see, many UFC fans didn’t like Brock already because of his WWE background and inexperience. Also, Mir is from Vegas so it’s no surprise the crowd would be backing their local boy. Put those two together and of course Brock would’ve been playing the heel role in the fight. But where I really give him credit is that he not only accepted the traditional “bad guy” role, he fully embraced it.

It was really something that he had probably done during his run in the WWE and he couldn’t have done it better. Egging on the crowd, getting in Mir’s face, talking about getting it on with his wife and even the fact that he didn’t touch gloves – a sign of respect – to start the fight were all textbook in trying to generate heat from the crowd. Come to think about it, Brock wasn’t event this good at being the heel as when he was doing it for a living with WWE.

The real question now is will people be tuning in to see Lesnar, or will they be tuning out because of his behaviour? Living in a culture that loves to see the arrogant toppled, I think Brock’s going to be on the tips of people’s tongues for a while in UFC crowds. But then again, the average on-looker who may not be a fan of MMA could be seriously turned off. That’s the risk you run when embracing heel-dom.
