Day of drama

There was no shortage of compelling stories on Sunday in the world of sports. Phil Mickelson made his charge at the Masters, firing a five-under 67, to win the biggest tournament of them all. He beat Lee Westwood by three strokes to take him his third green jacket.

He even made one ballsy shot from directly behind a tree. He lined it up, took his swing, went around the massive trunk and still somehow landed on the green. It’s big shots like that make champions and Phil made those shots.

And that guy that everyone was following intently for the past four days? Well Tiger Woods did far better than I expected, finishing fourth at -11. I would have guessed a finish somewhere in the teens for the recovering sex addict/bigamist. I guess the real question for him now is: When will he play next? And could he possibly win a smaller tournament with less pressure on him after how he fared at Augusta National?

Elsewhere, the NHL wrapped up their season with a game that actually meant something on the final day. Usually, there might be a game or two that can affect playoff seeding, but when the Flyers and Rangers met Sunday afternoon, the final spot in the Eastern Conference was on the line.

Even more fitting, with a whole campaign’s worth of games came down to a shootout for all the marbles. If you didn’t know by now, well, you should because the Flyers are in the playoffs and Rangers coach John Tortorella will probably be complaining about the shootout setup that cost his team some playoff revenue.

We’ll have a playoff preview before the games get going on Wednesday, but for now, I have to say that I can’t wait for a Caps-Pens matchup in round. That could be another one for the ages unless there’s an upset in the top-heavy East.
