Good call on the Kovalchuk void, NHL

Maybe Gary Bettman and the higher-ups at the NHL’s front office read this blog. That could be a reason why they put the kibosh on Ilya Kovalchuk’s 17-year deal with the Devils.

As I said here Tuesday, this megadeal was an obvious way to work around the league’s salary cap system. The years on the end, where the contract’s pay rate falls steeply, were obviously just tacked on to lower the yearly cap hit.

But how come this was the first deal to be voided when past contracts, just as obvious retirement deals, have been allowed to happen? Like Rick DiPietro’s 15-year deal, Chris Pronger’s seven-season extension with Philadelphia and Marian Hossa’s 12-year deal. These deals will never be completed, but were still allowed to pass without veto.

The NHL has no set a standard, but they’ve done so at the wrong time. They’re trying to make up for past mistakes, but while admitting their past flaws, they’re turning themselves into a laughingstock for not closing the loophole – the easiest way to end this mess.

Again, Bettman, if you want to avoid these sorts of shenanigans again, just change the rules about how salaries affect the cap. Don’t make it the average salary, make it the actual amount. It’s so simple, that I’m sure you’ll mess it up when you have the chance to go over the CBA next time.
