In a not-so-surprising move, Plaxico Burress was indicted on weapon charges yesterday and could mean that his career in the NFL is over. While the number of 3.5 years is being bandied about as the amount of time the minimum sentence is should Plax be found guilty, when is the last time that you heard of an athlete actually going all the way through trial and serving that kind of time?
I bet that Burress and his lawyers are smart enough to plead down to a lesser crime and he’ll serve two years tops. Then it will be interesting to see how Roger Goodell handles that case after dealing with Michael Vick recently. Would Burress even sit out a practice if/when he returns? If you think about it, he shouldn’t.
Vick’s crimes were more severe than what Burress did. Vick served his time for dog fighting while Burress has only been indicted on a charge of possessing an illegal weapon. The only person that Plax even hurt was himself when he shot himself in the thigh. The real problem about a possible comeback would be if he could physically do it. Taking a year or two off from the NFL at age 31 is unheard of and I just don’t know how effective Burress would be, should he attempt a return.
