In a crushing blow, no pun intended, to their hopes at next year’s World Cup, the United States will be without rising star forward Charlie Davies. Last night, Davies was involved in a single car wreck that killed another passenger and left him with two broken bones in his leg, among other injuries. After surgery to insert titanium rods, the typical recovery time is six to 12 months.
Going into today’s game, the U.S. have already qualified for the World Cup, so Davies absence won’t matter today. It’s the long term aspects of losing a strong, young striker. If Davies ever comes back from this horrific crash it will be stunning. Here’s hoping he can beat the odds.
