After the first round of games across Europe, we saw which squads came into the tournament ready to get off the mark quickly:
1.Belgium
Showed its dominance by completely running over Russia and should coast to the knockout stage.
2. France
Were content to let Germany attack and still kept the clean sheet while looking dangerous on the break.
3. Italy
With their attack humming, the Azzurri might not be challenged until the knockout stage.
4. England
In what likely will be their biggest test of the group stage, England’s youngsters impressed.
5. Netherlands
That four-minute defensive meltdown was very concerning and nearly cost them the three points.
6. Portugal
Took a lot more effort than it probably thought it would to beat Hungary – and needed some luck.
7. Austria
Lived up to their billing as bullies of smaller teams, but will be tested more in next games.
8. Spain
New young squad had all the possession in the world but couldn’t find a finish against Swedes.
9. Germany
Played great, but couldn’t unlock France’s solid defence. Was unlucky on own goal, lucky on offside calls.
10. Czech Republic
Got a nice-looking win on paper, but we need to see them do it against a better side.
11. Switzerland
Couldn’t grab the three points, but were incredibly close on a couple of late chances.
12. Croatia
Couldn’t create many chances with England’s midfielders applying pressure all game.
13. Ukraine
A heartbreaking loss against the Dutch, but showed that they can be a threat.
14. Slovakia
Win against 10-man Poland is hard to judge, but were certainly better than we expected.
15. Denmark
Showed incredible heart to even return to the pitch after Christian Eriksen’s collapse.
16. Turkey
Played a strong first half in the tournament opener, but fell apart after conceding the first goal.
17. Wales
Played well to earn a point, but we’re ultimately not sure if the quality is there.
18. Sweden
Defended with everything they had, but with just 15% possession, it was hard to do much else.
19. Finland
Picked up three points, but result was secondary to knowing that Christian Eriksen was OK.
20. Poland
Some bad luck, bad defending and a stupid foul cost them what should’ve been a winnable game.
21. Russia
There’s still hope, but didn’t show much while getting taken apart in opening loss.
22. Hungary
Put on a stellar effort for 84 minutes before finally conceding and completely falling apart.
23. North Macedonia
Were a bit fortunate on their goal against Austria, but were overwhelmed in crunch time.
24. Scotland
Well, at least they’ll show up on Euro highlight packages, albeit for conceding from the halfway line.
