EURO 2020: Italy remains atop our list of contenders

With the group stage games coming to a thrilling conclusion, we rank how the contenders stack up.

1.Italy (1)

Sent out its backups and still looked dominant against a feisty Wales side that had impressed.

2. Belgium (2)

Have one of the scariest attacking units in the tournament with Kevin De Bruyne now at 100%.

3. Netherlands (3)

Captain Gini Wijnaldum has scored as many goals at the Euros (3) as he did for Liverpool last season.

4. France (5)

Can’t say it impressed much in the group stages and the question is if it has that extra gear.

5. Sweden (7)

Surprise group winner finally conceded in third match, but bounced back with late winner.

6. Denmark (17)

Team has rallied around its fallen friend, but how will it fare away from home now?

7. Spain (12)

Finally turned all of that possession into the goals it had sorely missed.

8. Germany (4)

Quite simply, has a tough time breaking down sitting defences and dealing with counters.

9. England (6)

Didn’t concede a goal, but became lowest-scoring team to ever top a group at a Euro.

10. Portugal (8)

Cristiano Ronaldo and the attack have been on point, but the back end has proven to be flawed.

11. Switzerland (14)

Flexed its muscles a bit against Turkey and has the talent to make things difficult in knockouts.

12. Austria (15)

Picked up its two first-ever wins at Euro, but has its toughest test yet against Italy.

13. Croatia (13)

Have started to pick up a little momentum with talisman midfielder Luka Modric leading the way.

14. Wales (11)

After going down to 10 men against Italy, had little hope of pressing for a draw in earnest.

15. Czech Republic (9)

When you discount the mistakes it benefitted from against Scotland, the Czechs are average at best.

16. Ukraine (10)

When they’re not scoring in quick bursts, it seems their offence is very much lacking.

17. Hungary (18)

Heavy underdog nearly escaped the Group of Death, scrapping its way through every game.

18. Poland (19)

Robert Lewandowski tried his best to work his magic, but ultimately the bar was too high for the Poles.

19. Finland (22)

Unfortunately, Finland’s big role at the tournament will be as the opponent during Eriksen’s collapse.

20. Russia (16)

In need of a win to advance, the Russians instead suffered a blowout defeat to the Danes.

21. Scotland (21)

Despite playing two matches at home, they only one they truly showed up to was at Wembley.

22. North Macedonia (23)

If there was an award for showing heart, they’d win it. You have to be impressed with their heart.

23. Slovakia (20)

Team’s lack of quality started to show after surprise opening win over Poland.

24. Turkey (24)

After a great defensive record in qualifying, conceded the most goals in the tournament.
