NFL DRAFT RECAP: Pick-by-pick analysis on 2022’s first-round selections

Breaking down every pick from the first round of last night’s NFL draft taking place in Las Vegas.

1. Jacksonville

Travon Walker, DE, Georgia

The Jaguars are getting an elite athlete that can develop into a real stud on the defensive line.

2. Detroit

Aidan Hutchinson, DE, Michigan

Raced their card up to the podium as soon as the Jaguars passed on the Michigan stud.

3. Houston

Derek Stingley Jr., CB, LSU

Our first big surprise of the night comes early, but the Texans obviously have no concerns about his injury history.

4. New York Jets

Ahmad Gardner, CB, Cincinnati

Arguably the best corner in college football, Sauce immediately improves Robert Saleh’s defence.

5. New York Giants

Kayvon Thibodeaux, DE, Oregon

Talent-wise, there’s no doubting him. The Giants may have stolen the draft’s best edge rusher.

6. Carolina

Ikem Ekwonu, OT, North Carolina St.

The Panthers smartly pass on a quarterback to grab the draft’s top offensive lineman.

7. New York Giants

Evan Neal, OT, Alabama

Once tabbed as the top pick this year, this versatile behemoth should be a rock on the Giants’ line.

8. Atlanta

Drake London, WR, USC

In dire need of a receiver the Falcons get an awesome athlete that excels in grabbing 50/50 balls.

9. Seattle

Charles Cross, OT, Mississippi State

With the pick they got from Denver for Russell Wilson, the Seahawks start their rebuild on the O-line.

10. New York Jets

Garrett Wilson, WR, Ohio State

Reportedly offered this pick as part of a package for Niners star Deebo Samuel, but take a WR instead.

11. New Orleans

Chris Olave, WR, Ohio State

Saints move up five spots to take a WR to either compliment Michael Thomas or be his heir.

12. Detroit

Jameson Williams, WR, Alabama

Coming off a torn ACL, the Lions snag a player who could have been a top five pick in this draft.

13. Philadelphia

Jordan Davis, DT, Georgia

An absolute menace in the middle of the line, the Eagles jumped over the Ravens to take him.

14. Baltimore

Kyle Hamilton, S, Notre Dame

The Ravens love to take the best player available and Hamilton sure fits the bill despite average testing.

15. Houston

Kenyon Green, OG, Texas A&M

Perhaps our biggest reach so far, Green was rated by some as a second-round talent.

16. Washington

After sliding back a few spots the Commanders grab a solid running mate for Terry McLaurin.

17. L.A. Chargers

Zion Johnson, OL, Boston College

The Chargers grab a lineman to potentially fill their RT spot or slide in at a variety of other positions.

18. Tennessee

Treylon Burks, WR, Arkansas

The Titans shockingly trade away stud WR A.J. Brown to the Eagles and grab his immediate replacement.

19. New Orleans

Trevor Penning, OT, Northern Iowa

He will need some coaching to start at LT in the NFL, but is a solid prospect that plays tough.

20. Pittsburgh

Kenny Pickett, QB, Pittsburgh

Steelers must have been certain he’ll be able to carry the franchise in his incredibly small hands.

21. Kansas City

Trent McDuffie, CB, Washington

After a big run on offensive players, the Chiefs move up to take our third-ranked corner.

22. Green Bay

Quay Walker, LB, Georgia

A player that rose late in the pre-draft process, it’s still a surprise he was the first LB taken.

23. Buffalo

Kaiir Elam, CB, Florida

Stepped up two spots to take a corner that should be able to play a decent role on this contender.

24. Dallas

Tyler Smith, OT, Tulsa

The Cowboys needed to address some departures on their offensive line and did just that.

25. Baltimore

Tyler Linderbaum, C, Iowa

Another example of grabbing the best player, Linderbaum is unquestionably the draft’s top centre.

26. New York Jets

Jermaine Johnson II, DE, Florida State

Trade with Tennessee to take their third first-rounder – a guy we thought they could take fourth overall.

27. Jacksonville

Devin Lloyd, LB, Utah

Fast, instinctive linebacker should step into a starting role right away with Myles Jack gone.

28. Green Bay

Devonte Wyatt, DT, Georgia

The Packers double up on defence in the first, no doubt to Aaron Rodgers’ chagrin – again.

29. New England

Cole Strange, OG, Chattanooga

Who? The Patriots (of course) throw a huge curveball, taking a guard on very few people have heard of.

30. Kansas City

George Karlaftis, DE, Purdue

Fell down draft boards after some mediocre testing, should still make an impact at the NFL level.

31. Cincinnati

Daxton Hill, S, Michigan

Their secondary needed the most help in the draft and this versatile piece will fit right in.

32. Minnesota

Lewis Cine, S, Georgia

With the final pick of the first round, the Vikes grab a safety with the selection they got from Detroit.
