Trevor May had a little high heat left for Oakland A’s owner John Fisher on his way out the door.
While announcing his retirement on Monday, the A’s reliever took the opportunity to rip Fisher for his treatment of the team and its fans.
“Sell the team, dude … Sell it, man,” May said in a video posted to Twitch. “Let someone who actually, like, takes pride in the things they own, own something. There’s actually people who give a s*** about the game. Let them do it.
“Take mommy and daddy’s money somewhere else, dork.”
Fisher is in the midst of trying to relocate the team to Las Vegas, leaving Oakland without a major professional sports team after the NBA’s Warriors (to San Francisco) and NFL’s Raiders (to Las Vegas) left town in recent years.
Fisher, whose parents founded the Gap clothing company, has seen the team rank at or near the bottom of MLB in payroll for several years while finishing with an MLB-worst 50-112 record this past season.
“If you’re going to be a greedy f***, own it,” May said. “There’s nothing weaker than being afraid of cameras … Do what you’re going to do, bro. Whatever, you’re a billionaire, they exist, you guys have all this power — you shouldn’t have any because you haven’t earned any of it, but anyway, whatever.”
May played nine seasons in the majors, beginning with six in Minnesota and two with the New York Mets before his final season in Oakland. He had a 4-4 record and 21 saves this season with a 3.28 ERA in 46.2 innings.
