Ricky Romero has thrown a brushback pitch in the direction of Shohei Ohtani.
The former Blue Jays all-star didn’t take kindly to comments from the newly signed Dodgers star about how he was relaxing on his couch while the hopes of a nation were literally up in the air.
Replying to a social media post about how Ohtani was aware of the flight tracking saga that had many Blue Jays fans hopeful that the Japanese superstar was on his way to T.O. and thought it “was funny,” Romero took a fairly bold stance.
“I’m sure it was really ‘funny’. F his team and his agent.” Romero wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter). “My hopes were never up on him coming to Toronto. But I know lots of Canadians were hyped. Rogers Centre will be hyped at the end of April when they come into town. Hopefully he’s healthy by then. Should be a fun series.”
It seems that Romero, like many fans in the Six, feels a little bitterness about being strung along in the secretive process.
We’ll see how fans at the Rogers Centre react when Ohtani’s Dodgers come to town April 26-28, but we’re betting that there won’t be an empty seat in the house.
Ohtani signed a 10-year, $700-million US contract with the Dodgers and was introduced by the team at a news conference on Thursday. The Japanese superstar has won two MVP awards in the past three seasons and had been the biggest free-agent in the history of the sport.
The Jays reportedly were among the final three teams in the running to sign the two-way superstar. Now, Toronto must set its sights elsewhere in a bid to plug holes in its lineup after a devastating loss in the wild-card round to the Minnesota Twins.
