Drake Curse returns as rap star loses massive bet on Sean Strickland at UFC 297

This one is a real kick in the teeth for the Champagne Papi.

It looks like Drake’s bad luck in betting has again shown up in a big way.

The Canadian music superstar placed a $700,000 bet on defending UFC middleweight champion Sean Strickland for Saturday’s fight at Scotiabank Arena, posting a screenshot of the betslip on his Instagram stories.

The outspoken Strickland was taking on South African challenger Dricus Du Plessis in the main event of UFC 297. While the champion was favoured at nearly 2/1 odds, it simply wasn’t meant in God’s Plan.

Du Plessis weathered an early storm from the champ and picked up the pace in the later rounds, eventually scoring the split-decision victory to become the new UFC middleweight champion.

Had the decision gone the other way, Drake stood to win almost $1.4 million.

And, perhaps just to rub it in a little bit, the song playing in Scotiabank Arena while the South African celebrated was, indeed, God’s Plan.

This bet goes down in the books as one of Drake’s many losses.

Drake had previously bet against Strickland back in September when he scored the upset victory over Israel Adesanya. That time Drake had wagered $500,000 on the reigning champion to win by knockout – but we know how that ended.

Drake also lost a staggering $2 million betting on Adesanya in 2022 when he faced Alex Pereira at UFC 281, which ended with the Brazilian scoring a fifth-round knockout.

But, the old adage is that you shouldn’t bet more than you can afford to lose, so we think Drake will be just fine.

The Drake Curse isn’t exclusive to his gambling or UFC, either. In the past, the rapper has put the stink on several athletes and teams just by taking pictures with them or cheering for them at games.

While he does score the odd victory – the Raptors’ 2019 title being the biggest – it’s safe to say that if Drake is in your corner, you might want to switch sides.
