Oilers superstar Connor McDavid accosted by ‘cringey’ fans while buying beer in viral video

Can’t a guy just make a beer run in peace?

Apparently not if you’re Connor McDavid and looking to load up on a few celebratory drinks after winning the Western Conference final.

In a video posted on social media this week, the Edmonton Oilers star was accosted by fans while trying to load a couple cases of beer and other drinks into his trunk with his fiance, Lauren Kyle.

The clip shows three fans, two of which are sporting Oilers jerseys, getting up close with McDavid while he walks from the store to his car. In fact, the fan who is filming the video, selfie-style, pats the superstar on the back before asking for and going in for a hug — seemingly without the Oilers superstar’s go-ahead.

The other two fans also appear to give the three-time NHL MVP some pats on the back as he enters his car as well.

The group is repeatedly heard thanking McDavid and scream “Go Oilers, Go!”

Perhaps the worst part of the whole ordeal is that while the couple is carrying all of their cargo, not one of the three appears to offer to help.

But the coup de grace is that one of the fans is heard asking “that’s McDavid, right?” at the end of the video — meaning he wasn’t even sure they were “congratulating” the right person.

The video has caused an uproar on social media, with many users bashing the conduct of the fans involved for harassing the couple in such a public setting.

“This is beyond cringey from some Edmonton fans after the win. Hovering over this guy like he’s their next meal vibes. Leave him be. Quick congrats woulda been more than sufficient,” one user replied.

“It is one thing to say congrats and be excited but it is another thing to just stick a camera in his face and harass them both,” another posted on X.

“You’re straight up harassing him by the way,” a third pointed out.

Others were questioning why McDavid was even out on this beer run, given his obvious popularity and the fact he just helped send the team to the Stanley Cup final.

“Order delivery my guy,” one user posted, to which another replied “next time he will.”

Spittin’ Chiclets commentator Mike Grinnell posted: “Can we get McDavid some private security? Jesus leave the guy alone.”

At least one person volunteered to provide some security for the Oilers captain — none other than Georges Laraque.

“Hey @EdmontonOilers do you need a bodyguard for @cmcdavid97? I’m ready,” the retired NHL enforcer posted.

McDavid and the Oilers are set to take on the Florida Panthers in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup final with the puck dropping on Saturday night. Should Edmonton win it all, it will be the first time a Canadian team has hoisted the Cup since the Montreal Canadiens in 1993.
