Kelly Stafford, apparently, had a backup plan.
The wife of star NFL quarterback Matthew Stafford revealed this week that she once dated her now-husband’s college backup in a bid to make him jealous after she thought that he only wanted a casual relationship.
“Long story short, it wasn’t that cute of a relationship at first. I hated him. I loved him. I dated the backup to piss him off, which worked,” she said on a recent episode of the Off the Vine podcast, hosted by Kaitlyn Bristowe.
“He was the bad boy, too. Matthew is so sweet and Southern gentleman and the backup was the complete opposite,” Kelly continued.
“They lived in the same dorm because athletes lived in the same dorm and he would see my car there. So, at one point, he waited and followed me out to my car and got in my car and wouldn’t get out.
“He was like, ‘He’s not right for you.’ and I was like, ‘You can’t tell me that. Get the f*** out of my car.’ “Meanwhile, he’s dating like 12/10s, supermodels.”
Kelly also said that she “didn’t know casual dating,” when she and Stafford began seeing each other, but initially weren’t in a rush to make things serious.
“I was coming out of high school. I was in a long relationship in high school,” she said. “I was like, ‘You know, I want to take my time.’
“We met, talked all night, had a really good time. But he was a quarterback of an SEC college.”
While Kelly didn’t name the player that she dated to make the Super Bowl winner jealous, there are two candidates: Joe Cox and Logan Gray.
Cox was a backup on Georgia’s roster for the entirety of Stafford’s college career, but at least one social-media sleuth believes it was Gray, a QB/WR at the school.
Either way, Kelly’s plan to land the No. 1 pick in the 2009 NFL draft worked.
The couple were married in 2015 and have four children – all daughters.
