The road ends here

Well it was quite the anticlimactic finish last night with UNC completely destroying Michigan State. For a tournament that’s called March Madness, it failed to live up to its name in two ways. First, it isn’t March anymore and secondly, the only thing the championship game made me was mad.

Anytime that records are set for turnovers, steals, points and leads, well that just doesn’t make for a good game to watch. Would you tune into to watch me play NBA 2K9 turned down to “Pro” difficulty and rack up a 150-50 win over the lowly Knicks? Hell, would you watch it in real life even? Basketball isn’t fun or entertaining if there’s no drama. And, seriously, when the closest that MSU can pull to, in garbage time, is 12, well you’re better off turning on your XBOX.

I do have to applaud Ty Lawson for his eight steals, to tie a tournament record and break the championship record. A lot of them were essentially an overmatched Spartan throwing the ball to him, but half of good defence is being in the right place at the right time. I have no doubt he’ll develop into a good pro.

It’s also sad that a guy like Tyler Hansborough is going to go down as one of the best college players ever. Here’s a guy who has absolutely no future as a pro other than possibly energy guy or end-of-the-rotation guy on a bad team. Really, don’t you think his ceiling is being a poor man’s Christian Laettner? The future is not bright for Psyhco T and you have to feel for a guy whose life has peaked at age 21.

In the end, the tournament had its ups and downs and next year, it’ll all happen again. That’s the best thing about the NCAA tournament, no matter who’s in it, there’s always going to be some good times.
