It’s always a luxury when two huge events break in the sports world. Too often in the summer I’m stuck writing about silly MLB trade rumours that will never happen. But yesterday was a case of the former. With Usain Bolt destroying the 100 metre sprint world record and Tiger falling apart at the PGA Championship, well that’s two things that need to be commented on.
To start, quite simply, Usain Bolt was at it again in Berlin at the Worlds. To say that he beat his old world record would be an understatement. By running a 9.58, he topped the mark he made at the Olympics last year by .11 – the largest improvement of the record since they began timing races digitally. Bolt is simply, unbeatable the best sprinter ever. To even put this unique athlete besides some of the past greats, would even be a disservice to the Jamaican superstar. The only real question now is: How much better can he get? By topping his record by this much, him, or anyone in the future for that matter, will have one hell of a time beating the world record.
Later on Sunday, more history was made, but this event was in Minnesota. Tiger Woods broke his streak of winning tournaments after holding or sharing the lead going into the final day and he lost to an unknown golfer from Japan, Y.E. Yang.
Other than the fact that Tiger lost, there’s actually four other things that are worth noting: 1. Yang is the first Asian-born player to win a Major tournament. 2. Woods lead by two strokes going into the fourth round and ended up losing by three. 3. Yang was five over par after 23 holes and rallied to finish the tournament at -8. 4. Woods did not win a major this season, which I actually find shocking.
People will remember this tournament forever because Tiger lost his amazing streak to a nobody, and they should. The way that Woods putted yesterday was atrocious. He had several opportunities to pick up relatively easy birdies and couldn’t put them. Yang won the PGA Championship and Woods lost it. Although the latter is more true in my mind.
