NFL Week 8 Picks

It’s going to be one hell of a Sunday if the weather’s nice in Philadelphia. This could be the first time in the history of sports that the MLB, NFL, NBA and NHL have played on the same day. That has either got to mean that baseball’s going too long, the NBA’s staring too early or something’s out of whack with the calendar. It is easiest to blame baseball though, when they give teams days and days of rest between the division series and the championship series. Anyways, on to football…

The lines are from Las Vegas and the home teams are in CAPS.

BALTIMORE -3 over Denver
Both teams coming off a bye should make this heavyweight tilt extra interesting. The Ravens look better at home and the Broncos can’t win them all.

CHICAGO -13 over Cleveland
The Browns are considerably worse than the Lions, who the Bears have already embarrassed at Soldier Field. I bet Browns fans are wishing quite hard for this season to be over already.

BUFFALO +3 over Houston
I’m not buying the Texans as contenders yet and the only reason that Matt Schaub is tossing TDs is because his team can’t run them in at all. Plus this Ryan Fitzpatrick guy isn’t as horrible as we all thought he might be.

GREEN BAY -3 over Minnesota
The Packers are healthier than when these two teams met in Minneapolis and that should help keep Aaron Rodgers upright a bit longer. I wonder how this Favre guy will fare in his first visit to Lambeau…

San Francisco +12.5 over INDIANAPOLIS
The Colts can’t cover every week, or can they? Michael Crabtree already has more catches than Darius Heyward-Bey and Crabtree’s only played one game. Maybe he was right about his value, but then again, he has the luxury of having a quarterback throw to him, not JaMarcus Russell.

NEW YORK JETS -3 over Miami
Mark Sanchez won’t have time to eat a hot dog during this game; it should be a good and close one. The Jets should do a lot better against the Wildcat after already seeing it once this season.

DETROIT -4 over St. Louis
What a battle of titans we have here. At least the Lions show some sort of promise of improving the next few seasons. The Rams need to blow it all up, again.

Seattle +9.5 vs. DALLAS
The Seahawks lost LT Walter Jones and MLB Lofa Tatupu for the season this week and QB Matt Hasselbeck described his ribs as, “tight and sticky.” Whether that’s good or bad, I don’t know but the Cowboys pass rush finally showed up last week, much to Hasselbeck’s ribs’ chagrin.

SAN DIEGO -16.5 over Oakland
Don’t be fooled by these teams’ Week 1 tilt where the Raiders coughed it up at the end of the game. The Chargers are rolling now and Oakland’s rolling over.

Jacksonville +3 over TENNESSEE
Even if they’re at home, I don’t know how a winless team is favoured over a .500 team. I also doubt Vince Young can guide the Titans to a win here.

ARIZONA -10 over Carolina
For some reason, the Panthers are refusing to run the ball, which makes no sense because Jake Delhomme’s throws usually end up in defenders’ arms. Maybe John Fox isn’t a very good coach after all.

PHILADELPHIA (pick) over New York Giants
Ever since their secondary started resembling a hospital ward, the Giants have suffered greatly. The Eagles ultra-fast receivers shouldn’t have trouble getting open downfield for some long scores.

NEW ORLEANS -10 over Atlanta
The Saints came back huge last week and ended up winning by their smallest margin yet: 12 points. The Falcons defence came up small in Dallas last week and could look hopeless in New Orleans.

Last week: 9-2-1.
This season: 57-41-1.
