NFL DRAFT RECAP: Breaking down each pick starting with Bryce Young

With an early run on quarterbacks and several trades involving the top 10 picks and then even more later on, this year’s selection ceremony had plenty of excitement.

1. Carolina

Bryce Young, QB, Alabama

To the surprise of no one, the Panthers take the Crimson Tide star to be their cornerstone QB.

2. Houston

C.J. Stroud, QB, Ohio State

After weeks of rumours the Texans would go for a defender, they grabbed a QB of their own.

3. Houston

Will Anderson Jr., DE, Alabama

The Texans make a big move, trading up from No. 12 with Arizona to get the top pass rusher in the draft.

4. Indianapolis

Anthony Richardson, QB, Florida

New Colts coach Shane Steichen must’ve seen a lot of former protégé Jalen Hurts in the Florida QB.

5. Seattle

Devon Witherspoon, CB, Illinois

The Seahawks will look to bring back the Legion of Boom with this hard-hitting cornerback.

6. Arizona

Paris Johnson Jr., OT, Ohio State

Kyler Murray implored his team to draft Johnson for some much-needed protection and they obliged.

7. Las Vegas

Tyree Wilson, DE, Texas Tech

The Raiders will hope that Wilson can take some pressure off Maxx Crosby on the defensive line.

8. Atlanta

Bijan Robinson, RB, Texas

Positional value be damned, the Falcons may have gotten a game-changing offensive star.

9. Philadelphia

Jalen Carter, DT, Georgia

Eagles move up a spot for the supremely talented Carter and reunite him with some college mates.

10. Chicago

Darnell Wright, OT, Tennessee

A pressing need to protect Justin Fields and create running lanes, this mauler is a good fit.

11. Tennessee

Peter Skoronski, OL, Northwestern

Some questions about whether he’s big enough to play tackle, but should be a solid guard.

12. Detroit

Jahmyr Gibbs, RB, Alabama

A bit of a puzzling pick considering the Lions already have two good RBs and a few other holes.

13. Green Bay

Lukas Van Ness, DE, Iowa

Even with all of the pass catchers remaining on the board, the Pack went for a pass rusher.

14. Pittsburgh

Broderick Jones, OT, Georgia

Steelers trade with the Pats to leapfrog the Jets, who reportedly also had their eyes on Jones.

15. N.Y. Jets

Will McDonald IV, LB, Iowa State

After missing out on the top five offensive linemen, the Jets instead turn to an undersized edge.

16. Washington

Emmanuel Forbes, CB, Mississippi State

Weighing in at just 166 pounds and standing six-feet tall, Forbes is one slender man.

17. New England

Christian Gonzalez, CB, Oregon

Tabbed as a potential top-10 pick by many, the Patriots land a good, instinctual playmaker.

18. Detroit

Jack Campbell, LB, Iowa

Lions shore up their defence with the Butkus Award winner as the best LB in college.

19. Tampa Bay

Calijah Kancey, DT, Pittsburgh

Even with a highly rated QB still on the board, the Bucs go with an undersized defensive tackle.

20. Seattle

Jaxon Smith-Njiba, WR, Ohio State

The first WR finally comes off the board with the Seahawks getting another weapon.

21. L.A. Chargers

Quentin Johnston, WR, TCU

And now we get back-to-back WRs as the Chargers select the draft’s top outside receiving option.

22. Baltimore

Zay Flowers, WR, Boston College

With Lamar Jackson re-signed, the Ravens star QB should be even happier with this pick.

23. Minnesota

Jordan Addison, WR, USC

We are officially in a run of WRs as the Vikings take a solid prospect to play with Justin Jefferson.

24. New York Giants

Deonte Banks, CB, Maryland

Moved up one slot to get some much-needed help in their secondary.

25. Buffalo

Dalton Kincaid, TE, Utah

The Bills then make a trade to take the draft’s first TE, who the Cowboys may have been eyeing.

26. Dallas

Mazi Smith, DT, Michigan

A bit of a surprise given some players left on the board, but he’ll create pressure up the middle.

27. Jacksonville

Anton Harrison, OT, Oklahoma

News of Cam Robinson facing a PED suspension likely pressed the Jags into making this pick.

28. Cincinnati

Myles Murphy, DE, Clemson

An excellent athlete but a bit on the inconsistent side, the Bengals are a good team to coach him up.

29. New Orleans

Bryan Bresee, DT, Clemson

In need of some youth and depth on the defensive line, the Saints select the big Bresee.

30. Philadelphia

Nolan Smith, OLB, Georgia

For the fourth time in the past two years, the Eagles take a Bulldogs defender – which is not bad at all.

31. Kansas City

Felix Anudike-Uzomah, De, Kansas State

The reigning champions add a pass rusher from close by to replace free agent Frank Clark.
