NFL WEEK 1 PICKS: Atlanta Falcons get off to flying start against Carolina Panthers

The odds are from covers.com and the home teams in CAPs.

Detroit +4.5 over KANSAS CITY

The Chiefs were already playing with fire by gambling on so many unproven receivers and, with Travis Kelce out, they really crapped out in the opener.

WASHINGTON -7 over Arizona

The Cards haven’t named a starting QB yet but it doesn’t really matter. Be it Josh Dobbs or Clayton Tune, they’ll be under pressure all day by the Commanders pass rush. With a new owner and the fans fully behind the team, Washington gets a big W.

ATLANTA -3.5 over Carolina

Panthers coach Frank Reich has an awful record in Week 1 and, with Bryce Young making his first career start, that doesn’t bode well either. Don’t forget to throw in the fact that top Cats pass rusher Brian Burns may sit out and this could get ugly.

CLEVELAND +2.5 over Cincinnati

This Battle of Ohio is a real tossup. We’re not sure how close to 100% Joe Burrow will be for the Bengals, but we’re also not sure what kind of performance we’ll get from Deshaun Watson after his terrible showing to close out 2022. We’ll take the home dog, but would stay away from investing much on it.

BALTIMORE -10 over Houston

It’s a new era in Baltimore with a new offence not as heavily dependent on the rushing exploits of Lamar Jackson. In Houston, they’re starting their own era with C.J. Stroud at the helm, but they’re a ways away from doing much.

PITTSBURGH +2.5 over San Francisco

Getting Nick Bosa under contract sure helps the case for the 49ers, but the Steelers have an equal to him in T.J. Watt that has been warming up all summer. The Steelers are hard to argue against as a home dog.

Tampa Bay +6 over MINNESOTA

The Vikings were the kings of one-score games last season and got incredibly lucky. The Bucs are slated for a down season, but there’s still some talent on this roster and we won’t rule out them keeping it close.

Jacksonville -4.5 over INDIANAPOLIS

If the Jags want to prove that they are, in fact, the team to beat in the AFC South, they need to take care of business against their rivals. Anthony Richardson gets his first career start but won’t have the help of star RB Jonathan Taylor.

Tennessee +3 over NEW ORLEANS

Both of these teams have their eyes on the playoffs this season and would like to start out strong, but stand in each others’ way. While both sides have their strengths, it’s in the coaching department where the biggest one is and that lies on the Titans’ side of things.

SEATTLE -5.5 over L.A. Rams

With Cooper Kupp being ruled out and potentially headed to the IR, the Rams are down the only true weapon they have on offence. These two teams may know each other well, but they’re headed in different directions this year.

Green Bay +1.5 over CHICAGO

Justin Fields gets a big test to start the season, but the Bears roster just isn’t there yet. The Packers are a decent sleeper pick this season and should start out strong against a team they have a good history against.

DENVER -4 over Las Vegas

The Raiders have won six in a row in this division rivalry, but the Broncos have the leg up this year. Sean Payton has been brought in to turn things around while there’s a lot of disarray in the desert.

L.A. CHARGERS -3 over Miami

This should be one of the matchups of the week, with two high-powered offences going at it. When the Chargers are healthy, they have as strong of a roster as they come, while Miami has a couple of question marks.

Philadelphia -3.5 over NEW ENGLAND

Will the Super Bowl losers curse strike the Eagles out of the gate? We don’t think it’s likely with how solid the roster remains. The Pats offensive line is a worry, which is terrible news with Philly’s pass rush coming to town.

NEW YORK GIANTS +3.5 over Dallas

Daniel Jones and the Giants haven’t beat the Cowboys since January of 2021, but that doesn’t mean this version should be getting more than a field goal at home. Look for Brian Daboll to scheme up something to frustrate Mike McCarthy and Co.

NEW YORK JETS +2.5 over Buffalo

Will there be panic in the streets of New York if Aaron Rodgers loses his Jets debut in prime time? It’s a real possibility against a Bills team that should once again be amongst the AFC’s top contenders.

Last season: 131-133-7

Last season best bets: 7-11
