The New York Jets’ win on Monday night against the Bills was the definition of a pyrrhic victory.
While they were able to score the upset, their hopes for this season were decimated by Aaron Rodgers’ torn Achilles, suffered just four snaps into the game.
This is obviously bad news for anyone who drafted Rodgers, hoping that he would regain his MVP form and provide some value with a late-round pick. Anyone that started Rodgers on Monday suffered the ignominy of seeing a rare 0.0 on the scoreboard – which submarined some managers Week 1 hopes, we’re sure.
Now, it’s the Zach Wilson show for the Jets – and there’s a reason why the Jets were so motivated to go after Rodgers. Wilson had played incredibly poorly over the course of his career and doesn’t offer much in the way of production.
Going back to Wilson is also very bad news for managers who invested in Garrett Wilson.
In 10 games that the sophomore WR has played with Zach at QB, including Monday, Garrett has averaged 3.9 receptions and 48.1 yards with one TD – which he scored Monday.
In eight games with any other QB – including Mike White, Joe Flacco and Chris Streveler – Garrett has averaged 6.1 receptions, 82 yards and scored four TDs.
So, he’s roughly twice as productive with literally anyone else throwing him the ball. Ouch.
The tough thing is that it will be hard to sell high on Garrett Wilson right now, especially with the Cowboys on deck, so you’ll have to ride this out and hope for the best.
THE GOAT RETURNS
Everyone who had to deal with the pain of watching their first-round pick and undisputed tight end top dog sit out the season opener won’t have a repeat this week.
Travis Kelce is set to play on Sunday against the Jags and that’s good news for all involved.
Much was made about how poorly Kadarius Toney and Skyy Moore played when thrust into the spotlight, but having the big man back in the lineup will take a lot of pressure and coverage off of them.
With the Jags pass defence not looking all that great against Indy in Week 1, we should expect more than just a 0.9 combined points from that WR duo.
RUNNING WILD
Some stats to think about regarding running back usage from Week 1 that should have you running to the waiver wire: Kyren Williams outsnapped Cam Akers 67-33 in the Rams win over Seattle. While Akers did have more carries (22-15), it was Williams who was more productive, notching 54 yards and two TDs to Akers’ 29 and one TD … Rachaad White of the Bucs had -38 rushing yards over expectation in Week 1, which would’ve been the fourth-worst game in the 2022 season. It’s time to stash Sean Tucker … After J.K. Dobbins went out with a torn Achillles, Justice Hill and Gus Edwards split carries with eight each. But, it was Hill who played more snaps (29-22) and got the precious goal-line work.
SIT/START
Start Brock Purdy, QB, SF at LAR
Having thrown for at least two TDs in each of his seven regular-season starts, Purdy has a high floor.
Sit Dak Prescott, QB, DAL vs. NYJ
The Jets defence forced four turnovers from Josh Allen last week, which should have managers worried about Prescott.
Start David Montgomery, RB, DET vs. SEA
While rookie Jahmyr Gibbs will eventually eat into his carries, Monty is a solid every-week starter right now.
Sit Dalvin Cook, RB, NYJ at DAL
Had more carries than Breece Hall but was totally outplayed. Now for another bad matchup and uncertainty of volume.
Start Nico Collins, WR, HOU vs. IND
He’s the No. 1 pass catcher for the Texans and faces a Colts team that was torched by WRs last week.
Sit Drake London, WR, ATL vs. GB
Was shutout last week on his single target and needs passing volume to increase before we trust him.
Sit Hayden Hurst, TE, CAR vs. NO
The Saints didn’t allow a single completion to Titans top TE Chigoziem Okonkwo last week.
STAT CORNER
Former Giants WR Kadarius Toney had just one receiving yard for the Chiefs in Week 1. It took the entire Giants WR corps 38 minutes to get its first yard against the Cowboys.
ADD OF THE WEEK
Puka Nacua, WR, LAR
The fifth-round rookie had one of the best debuts ever, tying for the league lead in targets with 15 and tying for fourth in receiving yards.
DROP OF THE WEEK
Deon Jackson, RB, IND
Managed just 14 yards on 13 carries and lost two fumbles. Even worse news: Zack Moss is close to returning from a pre-season broken arm.
WAIVER WIRE DEFENCE
Tampa Bay Buccaneers DEF
The Bucs scored a shock in Week 1, creating three turnovers in a win over the Vikings. This week, they’ll take on the Chicago Bears, who looked dreadful in their debut.
