UFC superstar Conor McGregor weighs in on potential run for President of Ireland

UFC star Conor McGregor may be lining up a fight of a whole different variety.

The former UFC champion has taken to X (formerly known as Twitter) to express his desire to run for President of his native Ireland.

After posting a picture of himself on Sunday with the caption “Ireland, your President,” McGregor continued to show his interest in the role by posting what seems to be the beginning of a potential platform.

“Potential competition if I run. Gerry (Adams), 78. Bertie (Ahern). 75. Enda (Kenny), 74. Each with unbreakable ties to their individual parties politics. Regardless of what the public outside of their parties feel. These parties govern themselves vs govern the people,” McGregor posted.

“Or me, 35. Young, active, passionate, fresh skin in the game. I listen. I support. I adapt. I have no affiliation/bias/favoritism toward any party.

“They would genuinely be held to account regarding the current sway of public feeling. I’d even put it all to vote. There’d be votes every week to make sure. I can fund. It would not be me in power as President, people of Ireland. It would be me and you.”

Michael D. Higgins, 82, is the current president of Ireland, but is in his second and final term, which will end in 2025.

The post comes at a time in U.S. President Joe Biden, 81, also is facing questions regarding his age and potential for re-election in 2024.

Though McGregor technically is still an active fighter in the UFC, he has not competed in the octagon since a July 2021 loss to Dustin Poirier in which he broke his lower leg.

He was originally set to fight Michael Chandler this month, but it fell through due to testing issues between the UFC and USADA.

McGregor — a former UFC lightweight and featherweight champions — also has been very successful outside of combat sports, with several business ventures including a clothing line, Proper No. Twelve Irish whiskey and other entrepreneurial endeavours.

He isn’t exactly one to keep his nose clean, though. McGregor has been arrested several times in several countries for assault and has been accused of sexual assault several times, including earlier this year during a Miami Heat game.

Last month, in response to the stabbing of a woman and three children in Dublin, McGregor made multiple anti-immigration statements on social media, including a post stating that “Ireland is at war.”
