The stolen goods have been recovered in hockey’s heist of the century.
Yes, the Pittsburgh Penguins said in a news release that the shipment of Jaromir Jagr bobbleheads that was stolen earlier this month has been recovered – with the help of a “special cargo recovery team,” no less.
“The Penguins were notified last week that a special cargo recovery team negotiated the return of the stolen property to a secure warehouse located in Ontario, California,” the team said in a press release. “The truckload arrived in Pittsburgh today and is expected to be delivered to PPG Paints Arena within the next week.”
The bobbleheads were meant to be given out to fans at the Penguins’ March 14 game against the San Jose Sharks, but the team confirmed that the shipment had been stolen and gave fans a voucher to pick up the souvenir at a later date.
The team did not say where the bobbleheads were or how they were stolen in the first place.
They were originally produced to honour the Czech star, who had his jersey retired earlier this year.
With the story going viral after the big theft, he and the team had a bit of fun with the situation, producing a video for social media in which he looks set to start search for the bobbleheads with the caption “#JagrWatch.”
Penguins president of business operations Kevin Acklin also had fun with the news, potentially setting up a sequel to Jean-Claude Van Damme cult classic “Sudden Death.”
“Another chapter in the storied history of the @penguins. Kudos to @68Jagr for his search and rescue skillz! Stay tuned for details on a movie deal with @JCVD,” Acklin wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter), referencing the action flick in which a Penguins game was taken over by terrorists.
Fans that missed out on the original bobblehead giveaway will be able to cash in their voucher beginning on April 6 – unless the thieves strike again.
