It’s over! It is finally over! Hockey season has come to a merciful end — and it only took until the first week of June to do so. What kind of common sense would it take to realize that an ice sport shouldn’t be taking place when even in Canada it’s T-shirt weather?
While Tiger Woods probably wasn’t watching the game, I bet a lot of hockey fans were paying attention to the clinching game last night in Pittsburgh. There couldn’t have been a better regulation finish to an intensely close game. With seconds left and the goalie pulled, Pittsburgh pressed and nearly sent the game to overtime. But as the clocked ticked to zero and the puck rolled through the crease and in front of the goal line, the fans of Detroit jumped up to celebrate.
I’m sure there was rioting in Detroit after the buzzer — well, at least more than usual Detroit standards. So should supporters of Nicklas Lidstrom and Henrik Zetterberg. While Lidstrom became the first ever European-born player to captain a team to the Cup, Zetterberg was named the MVP of the playoffs, an honour that you won’t hear many arguments about.
It would have been much better winning the Cup at home in front of thousands of adoring fans as opposed to only hundreds in enemy territory, but still, the victory will be one of the sweetest in the lives of the 2007-08 Detroit Red Wings. As for Sid the Kid and Geno Malkin, your times will come. Don’t you worry about that.
